Thanks to George, I started installing the roof extrusions to complete the 18 inch stretch.
I Now have everything fabricated and test fitted.
Riveting starts next, if there are no glitches the back panel will be back on soon.

Now its time to patch the roof, if there is going to be a skylight this must be the spot.

All ideas welcome, I have the glass, hinges and catch from a mazda sun roof/skylight I would just have to figure out how to make the frame, the glass is bowed.
Anybody know of any flat sunroofs/skylights on other vehicles that might easily be fitted to a kubvan ?

stop.... go look for flat panels like rear of ups/fed-x truck... they been doing full length translucent and i cannot beleive a smoked or almost clear one by this point is not made..

for venting... use a croch vent from by door.... what grumman used on kurbwats to vent them up top... they put it by the dome light...

Thanks Burnt toast, opened my horizons to look for alternatives and found this at the wrecker.
Its the glass out of a flat deck truck wind fairing it fits perfect, tempered glass aluminum frame, and looks great.
Its got a nice flange on the inside so I can caulk it and snug up tight, should never leak.

4X4 camper van update

Postby luckham » Fri Apr 03, 2015 8:43 pm

It's been a while since I posted here. I hacve been jumping back and forth between this and the EV project.
I have had some significant progress in the last few weeks on the 4X4.
Short story is :
The 1.9 TD is connected to a yota 4X4 transmission with an ACME adapter plate and working.
The motor and tranny are now suspended in the vehicle in the mounting location.
The drive shaft is connected to the rear differential with the original yota drive shaft. This was not planned that way but it fits perfect. (52inches)
The front drive shaft for the hard axle needs to be shortened 9 inches.
The steering shaft is through the firewall and inches from the Pitman gear box for the original steering connections for the Toyota, again can't believe that it lines up so nicely. See the photos for the details of all the above.

Steering coupling

Next steps include:
Fabricating the motor mounts, now that the final position is confirmed.
Mount the power steering pump on the left side of the engine.
Connect the hydraulic clutch.
Finalize the mounting of the new front shocks.
Finalize the front seat configuration, install stick shifts and close in the floor.
Finalize the new fuel tank configuration. (2 tanks left and right in that cavity below the floor and behind the seats.)
Install radiator turbo filter, ducting and front grill.
Figure out and install exhaust system.
Finalize camper fittings.
Go camping ...........

The list is mostly for my own tracking.
I am happy with the progress thru the winter, definitely reached the point where it looks like it is all going to work.
Watch for further progress thru the spring/summer.

Time marches on much faster than this project.
That said, significant investment in sub-component preparation this year has finally reaped rewards.
This past week the VW 1.9 litre TDI engine and the Toyota 4X4 tranny have been re-installed. The rear suspension and differential were also installed.
The van now sits on it's tires and rolls back and forth with no issues.
Engine wiring harness, ECU, clutch, and steering box next, oh still needs a radiator :).
With brakes, general vehicle electrics, the interior and cosmetics to follow.
There is a faint glimmer of hope that the "Camper Van" may be attending the 2019 Island folk festival. (Music not Volks)
